Bougainvilleas are almost everywhere in Singapore. They are commonly found on overhead bridges in Singapore, residential parks and gardens. The bright colourful 'flower' is actually modified leaf known as bract. The true flowers are the small white tubulars in the centre of colourful leaves. These resilient plant is drought-tolerant and thrive in dry soil. Overwatering will stop it from flowering. Bougainvillea was named after 18-century French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville.
At Singapore Botanic Garden, there is a Bougainvillea garden featuring white, pink and red bougainvilleas.
