Plumeria tree is also known as the Temple tree as they are commonly planted in Buddhists temple in Asia. Plumeria is listed among the "Five Trees and Six Flowers" in many Buddhist countries. The five trees are the Bodhi (Ficus), Sal (Shorea), Ashoka (Saraca), Sandalwood (Chandan) and Banyan tree. The six flowers are lotus, specific plants are planted to create a conducive environment to meditation. In the Jatakas Tales, it is believed that in one of the Buddha's past lives, he was a Plumeria tree.
In Hawaii, woman put plumerias behind her right ear to indicate she is single. They are also used for creating garlands and decorations for weddings and parties.
It is the national flower of Laos. The flowers are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat cough. The milky sap of plumeria is poisonous and can cause skin irritation.
In Chinese, they are known as Egg flower or 鸡蛋花 (Ji Dan Hua) as the centre yellow on the five petals white flower resembles an egg.
