Stunning Begonias at Singapore Gardens by the Bay 如诗如画的秋海棠新加坡滨海湾花园

I love the cheerful begonias with brilliant colours and beautiful asymmetric leaves at Singapore Gardens by the Bay, Flower Dome. Begonia belongs to the genus Begonia and is one of the largest genera of flowering plants with over 2000 species and numerous hybrids. 

Interesting facts of Begonias

1) Begonias are named after Michel Begon, a French former governor of the French Colony of Saint-Domingue now known as Haiti.

2) With their vibrant colours and beautiful flower forms and intricate leaves, they are  grown for ornamental in gardens. 

3) Begonias are monoecious plant as a single begonia plant produces both male and female flowers. Male flowers tend to be more attractive and multi-petaled and female flowers usually have a single bloom with 3-winged ovary (triangular seed pod) behind the petals.

In Chinese culture, Begonias symbolise changes in life and protection . It  inspired Chinese poets like Li Qingzhao 李清照, a talented Song Dynasty female poet to write this poem, 如梦令 (ru meng ling) or Like a Dream. 

昨夜雨疏风骤，

浓睡不消残酒，

试问卷帘人却道海棠依旧。

知否，知否，应是绿肥红瘦

Last night the wind and rain howled, The remnants of wine settling in me as I slept, I asked [the servant who rolls up the curtains in my room] if the begonias were as [they were before]. Do you know, do you know, it should be that green is plentiful and red lacking. (Translation from here)

我喜欢新加坡滨海湾花穹花园里色彩鲜艳的秋海棠。秋海棠属于秋海棠属，是开花植物中最多的属之一，有2000多品种。

1） Begonias以Michel Begon的名字命名，Michel Began是法国圣多明戈殖民地（现称海地）的前总督。

2） 它们有着鲜艳的色彩、美丽的花朵和错综复杂的叶子，被种植在花园里作为观赏植物。 

3） 秋海棠是雌雄同株的植物，因为一株秋海棠既能开出雄花，也能开出雌花。雄花往往更具吸引力，多瓣，雌花通常开一朵花，花瓣后面有3翅子房（三角形种子荚）。

在中国文化中，秋海棠象征着生活的变化和保护。它启发了李清照等中国诗人李清照,一位才华横溢的宋代女诗人写了这首诗，如梦令 。
